Use Case #5: Wireless cameras for monitoring

Security within university campuses is an urgent necessity for all students and employees who carry out their activities at the Politecnico. The gradual extension of campus opening hours, which has allowed for increased cultural, laboratory, and study activities even in the evenings, has made the need to secure campus facilities and the connection route to public transportation stations even more pronounced.

Through this UC, the effectiveness and usability of a video surveillance system based on 5G cameras and state-of-the-art safety, and security algorithms integrated into a single ecosystem will be validated.

The introduction of wireless cameras with 5G connectivity enables flexible installation and quick repositioning while delivering performance equivalent to wired models. High-speed broadband supports features such as ultra-high resolution, dynamic pan-tilt-zoom functionality, and infrared vision, all while maintaining high frame rates and minimising compression artifacts.

The processing of high-quality video streams from 5G cameras with AI-based analysis tools allows for particularly effective analysis with timely recognition of dangerous situations and very low values of false positives or false negatives, focusing the attention of security personnel on relevant areas and events.

The technology employed—including cameras, 5G connectivity, edge/cloud processing, and AI algorithms—will be based on commercial products that meet all required certifications to ensure compliance with quality, security, and privacy standards set by current regulations. As a result, the hardware and software infrastructure components will have a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) between 7 and 9.
